Picnic on a wild beach

The eastern end of the island is the perfect place for a picnic on the sweep of golden sand below the high, marram-topped dunes. At high tide the sun-warmed mud and sand make the water here the perfect temperature for swimming, and on sunny days it is a fun-filled destination for flotillas of brightly coloured boats of every description landing their occupants for a picnic and swim.

Scolt Head Island, the island ferry

There are surprisingly few islands in the North of England, making those we do have very special. Many of them are protected bird reserves with large populations of puffins and other seabirds, rarities or spectacular migrations. Others are places of spiritual retreat or destinations for physical challenge with tidal crossings across some of Britain’s most notorious sands. There is plenty of mind-blowing history, as well as the opportunity to walk on Spurn Head, the most recently formed island in England. There are some quirky islands too; where else can you realistically expect to meet a king and a royal family?
